Recently, U.S. technology companies have taken advantage of a visa program that grants an initial three-year term with the possibility to renew for an additional three years. This arrangement has allowed businesses to secure skilled engineers and researchers from nations such as India and China to meet hiring needs.
A senior official argued that the current scheme may limit available positions for local workers. He advocated raising the fee for new visa applications to $100,000, significantly exceeding the previous fee of roughly $2,000 to $5,000. One expert maintained that the proposed fee would amount to a minor expense for large tech firms. He remarked that if concerns existed about foreign visa holders taking high-paying jobs, the solution would involve reducing the number of permits issued rather than modifying the fee structure.
Debate persists.
